Let's learn some more about Cells of Pulp

As I already discussed pulp in my previous blog Today I will tell you about Cells present in the pulp tissue in detail.

CELLS-

Odontoblasts

These are the second most prominent cells in the pulp and lies in the periphery of the pulp adjacent to the predentine also called the " odontogenic zone of the pulp".

The shape of odontoblast in the tooth pulp-

Tall and columnar in the crown portion.

Cuboidal in the middle of the root.

Flat and Spindle shape in the apex of the root.

Odontoblast is approx 5-7 microns in diameter.

Fibroblasts

These are the cells that occur in the greatest amount in the pulp tissue. The function of these cells is to form college fiber and ground substance and maintain them throughout the life of the pulp.

But it also has the ability to ingestion and degradation of collagen fiber and ground substance.

The Shape of the cells-

Stellate shaped cells having extensive processes that communicate with the processes of other pulpal fibroblasts to form a syncytium.

In older pulps, the fibroblasts appear spindle-shaped or round shaped with short processes and have few cytoplasmic organelles.

Fibroblasts help in the inflammatory and healing process by the secretion of growth factors, cytokines, colony-stimulating factors, FG F-2, and VEGF.

Mesenchymal Cells

Undifferentiated mesenchymal cells are polyhedral shaped cells, larger than fibroblasts, having large oval staining centrally placed nucleus peripheral processes.

They are the primary cells in the young pulp. They are mostly found in the cell-rich zone and few of them occur in the central area of the pulp. These cells are believed to be totipotent in nature.

Defense Cells

A number of cells are found in the dental pulp that acts as defense cells of the pulp. They include mast cells, plasma cells, histocytes, or macrophages.
The nerve plexus Raschkow located central to the cell-rich zone.
Plasma cells are seen during inflammation of the pulp.

They develop wider zones of inflammation.
